There was a family friend we had that had problems like this. Two slipped discs from a bad car accident. He eventually found a pain management doctor that was actually helpful. On a visit, saw him kick back an entire fifth of whiskey, and supposedly that only took the edge off. He also told stories about how he had to find "alternate means" of pain management, and he told of how the junkies (yeah junkies because they could supply stuff) would be scared of how much he'd take. To my understanding not intravenously, just oxy. He was also unable to hold a job, so on assistance; but that didn't cover all the bills, so he'd have to go cold turkey to sell off some pills. Very hard life after the injury.
