I got to see the American version of the “Grudge” with Sarah Michelle Gellar, vs seeing the OG “Grudge”. There is a certain cultural vocabulary that doesn’t easily translate. (The original “Grudge ” still fucks with me, even if I still don’t get the cultural specifics). Sorta like the American version of “The Ring” vs the original “Ring” On a tangent….. When they were trying to kill “Neon Genesis Evangelian” by giving them too little money to finish the animation, they delved into a bunch of Metaphysics that only make sense to those steeped in the Japanese mythos. I don’t think I knew they remade The Grudge, I saw the original in theaters and remember it being pretty scary.
