That’s all very well and good for those who see it facing south; the Kanji on the left says “east” and the other “west”. If you see it from the other side it’s just gibberish.
No idea why “exit” is in English.
there’s many words that have crossed over to other languages, I would bet this one was from international signage standards for interstates.
no one’s going to see this from the other side that matters, it’s obviously an event of some type.
