The Japanese destroyer Shimakaze was designed as an offense-oriented escort for the fleet, intended to deliver a large torpedo broadside into enemy lines. Shimakaze had both the largest torpedo battery (15 tubes) and the highest designed top speed (39 knots) of any destroyer during World War II.
