After the Battle of Germantown in 1777, the pet dog of British General William Howe, “Lila”, got loose and crossed the lines to enter George Washington’s tent. When he saw Howe’s name on her collar, Washington had the dog fed and brushed before returning it to General Howe under a flag of truce.
