My grandfather was in the Merchant Marines as a radio operator in the 1920’s. (Morse Code days) His ship was in Tokyo in 1923. They left and went to China. Afterwards, they returned to Tokyo. After the earthquake. Over 100,000 people died in the firestorms that ravaged the city. He took before and after photos. He said that there was an enormous pile of burnt bones in the middle of a square. He did not take photos of it.
