Bah… The only reason the space shuttle had wings as large as they were was due to meddling by the Air Force… Like some insane requirement to deliver payload to a polar orbit and then land in the US in like one orbit….
They could get to a polar orbit, but then there was not enough leftover payload ability to actually send anything useful to orbit.
