I rode through Gettysburg in 2001. It’s a gigantic graveyard. And there are lots of monuments to the men who died there. I walked around one flagpole, and all around it were mass graves of unknown soldiers. 315 UNKNOWN, 500 UNKNOWN, 690 UNKNOWN. Nothing beautiful about that level of death.
If you are going through the area, I suggest you stop and visit the museum. It’s small, but amazing.
